The Deadline for the Charger Medallion Application this year is April 19th, 2019. The Charger Medallion is an award that seniors, who have attended CCHS for ALL 4 years, could be eligible for based on school activity/participation. The Charger Medallion application can be found online, https://cchs.canyonsdistrict.org/ , under the “STUDENT” tab at the bottom. The application must be downloaded and filled out on a computer. No handwritten submissions will be accepted this year. The document you download, excel file, will have a few tabs at the bottom. The first tab is the information/points sheet. The second tab is the fillable portion, where students will put how they earned points and how many. The third sheet is a continuation for students who need more space for point calculating. The sheet will auto-calculate their point totals for them. As soon as they have inputed all their points, they will print the document and bring it to school for the proper signatures next to each item. Once that is complete, they will submit their finished forms to Andrea Winegar in the Student Center by April 19, 2019. He is sincerely dedicated to his student’s success in the classroom. He is pleasant to work with, and kind to all those around him. - David Waung is amazingly hardworking and always wanting to improve. One of the best new teachers I have ever seen!! He always gives 110% everything. - David comes with an engineering background, but teaches like he’s been doing it for years. He works well with students and is willing to go the extra mile for students who are struggling (and generally have huge gaps in concepts from previous years). David asks for help and suggestions in order to continually improve his teaching practices. He also makes his voice heard and has great suggestions of ways to improve instruction and help the kids. He’s been a great addition to our department and the freshman are lucky to have such a dedicated and hardworking teacher. - This is David’s first year at the school and like most first year teachers, he is here early in the morning and stays late into the afternoon. He brings enthusiasm and a fresh perspective to teaching mathematics. He pushes his students to make connections that will help them in future math courses. He is a team player and works well with our PLC group. He doesn’t try to recreate the wheel but adds to what we have been doing in a creative and valuable way. Students like working with him, especially those students that haven’t done well in math before. He works with them to recover credit keeping the standards high but setting attainable goals for them to complete. I hope this is the first of many years for him at our school. From Students: - Mr. Waung is so cool. I have enjoyed learning from him. He is always nice and comes very prepared each day. I can’t actually believe it is his first year teaching. He seems like he has been doing it forever. - Having Mr. Waung has been great for me. Math has always been a subject I have struggled with, but this year I have made a lot of progress. I can say it’s because of Mr. Waung. He has made math interesting and does such a good job of giving all of us students extra support. ESP of the month: Kimberly Miller From Colleagues: - Kimberly is a valuable asset to the CTE department and Corner Canyon High School. It is obvious how much she cares about the students in our school and providing them with the best opportunities available. - Kimberly is always going above and beyond to help the members in our department whether its printing posters for our classrooms, setting up an AppleTV for a presenter, or helping out a last-minute sub. She seems to have the answer to every question and a solution to every problem. She is genuine and shows sincere concern for everyone on our team. We are so lucky to have her here at Corner Canyon - Kimberly is a super trooper! As one of the CTE Assistants she helps to oversee the college-admissions process of over 500 students, and then helps in tracking the registrations and paperwork for those students. Kimberly also creates our Concurrent Enrollment spreadsheets in order to ascertain that our Concurrent Enrollment students have met all prerequisites with qualifying scores and GPAs. She functions as one of our on-site proctors for College Placement Testing and Utah State Skills Testing. In her spare time, she will assist in completing purchase orders, NPO’s, and other fun paperwork that has a four-letter acronym. - Our CTE teachers and Concurrent Enrollment teachers know that Kimberly can solve a lot of problems, and she is ready to assist with a smile. Kimberly is one of our ESP’s who was hired before the school was even open, and we hope she stays for many more years to come! ACT Testing The ACT will be administered to the junior class on February 20th – A day. Shout out to the officers for taking the time to recognize the team and their championship. Corner Canyon recently played host to the Region 7 Sportsmanship Summit. Students from CCHS, Timpview, Alta, Jordan, Brighton, and Cottonwood came together to create a sportsmanship campaign for region 7 activities and events. Teacher of the Month is KELLY CORLESS From Colleagues: - Kelly is such a hard-worker; not only is she teach all freshman, but she’s doing a Master’s degree in her “spare” time – Superwoman, I tell you. She patiently works with the 9th graders, stays late to let them work in her classroom, and manages to be fun at the same time. - Outside of academics, she’s the mentor for the Super Smash Brothers club and let’s them stay until 4:00 – long after most are here. They leave her room a little smellier than before, but know they have a safe place here at the school. - Kelly is a Rockstar!! From Students: - Ms. Corless is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had. She cares so much about what she teaches. I have never loved English, however, this year has been so much better because Ms. Corless takes the time to talk to me and make sure I understand the material. - I had Ms. Corless last year and I can say, without a doubt, she is the best teacher I have ever had. She is always smiling and she makes learning fun. She is more than deserving for teacher of the month award. In fact she should win teacher of the year! ESP of the Month is CHELSEA DARRAH From Colleagues: - Chelsea Darrah is easily the best IT tech Corner Canyon has ever had. She is consistent, dedicated, motivated and absolutely easy to work with. There has never been a time where she didn’t respond to my email or come help me when I reached out to her. She is so deserving of this award. - Chelsea is part of the lifeline of the school. Without her, all of our jobs would not run as smoothly. There have been so many times that she put down something she was doing to run and help me without even complaining. She is always happy to help. - She is the best. Plain and simple. I wouldn’t want anyone else in that position. I don’t know a single teacher who doesn’t think she is doing an amazing job for us, and our students. I am so happy we get her here at CCHS. - Chelsea is fantastic to work with. You never have to worry if she is going to follow through with her job. She makes a commitment to be the best at her job and it has shown through her dedication to our school. Whether she is running to help a teacher, help stop student cyber attacks or grab an extra charger cord for someone…she is there. Chelsea could go many directions with her career with the knowledge and experience she has. She chose to work in schools because she cares about students and their futures. - If you ever have questions about Disney World…ask Chelsea, she knows more then any human being I have ever met!!! These students have likely been sleep deprived as they have put in lots of late nights and early mornings studying, working, serving, and leading. Congratulations to all the applicants and to the 2018-2019 Sterling Scholar Award Winners. CCHS athletes took advantage of a short week due to fall break to bring home a few State Championships. The victory light was on almost every night at CCHS starting Tuesday with a state semi-finals win by the girls soccer team. They put an end to Skylines season and advanced to the finals on Friday to meet up with the Spartains from Murray. The two teams started the season by facing each another in the season opener. The Chargers came away with the victory early in the season. The Spartains haven’t lost since that afternoon. The Chargers made sure that they were the only team to beat Murray all year by winning the State Championship, 2-1 on Friday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Also on Tuesday, our volleyball team was in action taking on Timpview. It was a great battle between two very competitive teams. The Chargers eventually pulled out the victory with the scores of 19-25, 25-17, 25-12, 12-25, and 15-10. Sophomores and JV pulled out wins in their matches as well for the sweep over the Tbirds. Skyline, West, and Murray will all battle for a chance to take on the Chargers. The game will be Saturday at 12:00 in Charger Stadium. The Mountain Bike Team was in action Saturday as they traveled to St. George with bragging rights on the line. When the dust cleared, the Chargers had edged out Lone Peak for the victory and another State Championship. I hope everyone took the time to enjoy Fall Break as much as some of our student athletes did. Congratulations to all the coaches and teams that were in action over the long weekend. This week is Red Ribbon Week and the PTA is kicking it off on Monday night with a presentation from Dr. Christy Kane. She will be presenting on Electronics and the Developing Brain. Here at CCHS, we are continuing to build traditions that will hopefully carry on for years to come.
Things kicked off on Tuesday with our annual Homecoming Assembly. Mr. Hunter from the UIAAA presented the Directors Cup Award. The Directors Cup is awarded each year to the top school in each class that demonstrates combined excellence in athletic, academic, and sportsmanship & student-leadership. Each category makes up a percentage toward a school’s total ranking. 1. Athletic (40%): The place or position a school team finishes in the state tournament. 2. Academic (40%): Varsity team GPA. 3. Sportsmanship & student-leadership (20%): Schools participation in UHSAA-sponsored sportsmanship and leadership initiatives. During the assembly, students competing for the title of King and Queen, showcased their lip-syncing skills. Gabe Fankhouser and Emma Ware performed the Homecoming theme, To The Ends Of The Earth. The dance will be Saturday, October 13th, right here in Charger Arena. Our soccer team opened the State Tournament Tuesday afternoon at 4:00. The Chargers ended the season for the East Panthers with a 4-1 victory. Goals were scored by Kenli Coon (2), Kayla Milford, and Willow Collins. The team traveled to Maple Mountain on Thursday for a second round matchup with the Golden Eagles. The Chargers pulled out the victory, 3-1, to advance to the state semi-finals. Goals were scored by Kenli Coon, Willow Collins, and Megan Astle. The Chargers now take on Skyline with the winner advancing to the State Championship. Wednesday’s pep rally opened with the Powderpuff Championship. The red team coached by Danielle Dahle took home the hardware. Students competed as grade levels throughout the pep rally in various events. A great firework show and the burning of the CC culminated the evening. Thursday was the first ever Charger Care Day. Every student and adult in the building took at least 30 minutes to help clean up our campus and surrounding community. A huge shout out to Royce Shelley for overseeing this project. Immediately after school a massive pizza and tailgating party ensued. Thursday night the CCHS Chargers took the field against our rival, the Alta Hawks. The team came out of the locker room pumped up and ready to battle. The Chargers came out on top 49-21. CCHS travels to Jordan on Wednesday, October 17th, to take on the Diggers with the Region Championship on the line. Starting Monday, tickets can be purchased in the main office. Construction is well underway. Footings are dug, compacted and almost ready to be poured. The old entrances have been removed making way for the new wings. Next week is fall break. There is no school on Thursday and Friday. I want to challenge the students to come back after fall break ready to finish up the first quarter strong. The end of the quarter is October 26th.
