Principal Jensen's Updates
We love and miss our students deeply. This week seems to have been a difficult one as we work through online classes, online meetings, and online communication. Our amazing faculty and staff have a message for all Corner Canyon students, especially our seniors.
Graduation: We WILL be doing a graduation ceremony, though the timing and structure of that ceremony is still being decided. The Canyons School District Board of Education met on April 21st to discuss plans for graduation and decided to survey seniors and their parents regarding the presented options. Whichever option is chosen must comply with Salt Lake County health department recommendations. For more information on which options were discussed, please see the published summary of the board meeting. Cap and Gown Pick Up: Grading Scale: At the board meeting, an alternate grading scale was approved for 4th quarter. At Corner Canyon, we want every student to receive a passing grade for 4th quarter and we hope this new grading scale will relieve some of the stress and pressure students and families are feeling. This grading scale will not apply to Concurrent Enrollment classes, as they are governed by the college. If you have questions about the grading scale or how it will affect your student, please reach out to your student's counselor and/or assistant principal.

I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break last week. Our world was rocked a little bit yesterday with the announcement that students and teachers will not be returning to school for the 2019-2020 school year. Decisions are currently being made about end of year activities such as yearbook distribution, awards nights, and graduation. We should have answers to those pressing questions by next week. Teacher of the Year! I am so happy to announce that this year's Corner Canyon High School Teacher of the Year is Ms. Melissa Thorne! Ms. Thorne, affectionately known as "Mama T," directs our award winning choir program and is responsible for the beautiful singing that can occasionally be heard under the dome. "[Ms. Thorne] is one of the hardest workers at the school. She works long hours, by choice, and she never complains. She always has a positive attitude. She also is great at connecting with the students inside and outside the classroom." "She brings music and positivity and confidence to the students." "[Ms. Thorne] makes every student feel like they can sing. She provides skill and knowledge and technique with humor, love, and care." Congratulations Ms. Thorne! Honor Cords: We’ve moved all Honor Cord applications to an online format. From this point forward, we will not accept physical Honor Cord applications requiring teachers’ signatures. Online applications for Honor Cords should take between 1-3 minutes to complete depending on which Honor Cord. Here are some things to know:
Charger Medallion: We’ve moved the Charger Medallion application to an online format. From this point forward, we will not accept physical Charger Medallion applications requiring signatures from teachers, advisers, or coaches. Here are some things to know:
CANVAS Use and Communication: All class content has transitioned to online delivery through Canvas. Each teacher should have an outline for the week, 2-3 hours worth of weekly assignments, and clear due dates for those assignments on their Canvas page. Many teachers are using the Announcements feature to provide that information. To receive the announcements for your student's courses, you must first set up a parent observation account using this tutorial. To opt into the communications once you create your account, go into the Notifications setting for your account. Follow the tutorial below. Corner Canyon High School is usually bustling with activity from early morning to late at night. Walking through the empty building these days really shows just how unique and unsettling this situation has become. We miss the students, teachers, and community members who bring the school alive and we are hoping to see you all again after May 1st. In the meantime, here is more information about the current state of the closure.
School Access: In support of Salt Lake County’s stay-at-home order, Corner Canyon will not be accessible to students and parents except by appointment. On Tuesdays (April 14, 21, and 28), students and parents may access the main office and Media Center from 9 - 11am. No other parts of the building will be open. We also highly encourage you to avoid coming to the school if you don't have to. As a reminder, no school or district employees will be in buildings or available during Spring Break, April 6-10th. We are encouraging everyone, including parents, students, teachers, and staff, to use that week as a much needed break. Online Learning: This week marked the start of new instruction being delivered online. Students at the high school level are expected to do 2-3 hours of work per class each week. Content is being delivered through Canvas and grades will continue to be transferred to Skyward each week. Teachers are expected to keep "office hours" where they will be available for virtual meetings. They are also expected to respond to emails within 24 hours ,so please reach out to them if you and/or your student has questions regarding class content or procedures. Administration is also available by email or phone to help you and your student navigate online learning. Canyons District has created a Parent Connections page to help parents and student navigate online learning. You will find information about Canvas, lesson structuring, and the district's response to the COVID-19 situation at that site. As a friendly reminder, online school is still school and discussions held online should be appropriate and academic. GoogleMeets and Canvas discussion pages are being used for instruction, so good online etiquette is crucial. Remember, if something is against the rules in a physical classroom, it's also against the rules in a virtual one! Senior Students: At this time, we have no information about any possible impact to graduation ceremonies. We will send information out to the community as soon as we have answers. As of today, April 2nd, graduation is scheduled as normal but that is absolutely subject to change as the situation changes. Administration and Counselors at Corner Canyon have made the decision to clear NGs for all Seniors, as they will not have the time or opportunity to make those up prior to graduation. If a senior was on track to graduate or was only deficient due to NGs prior to closure, he or she simply needs to pass 4th quarter classes to be eligible for graduation. Any questions regarding senior graduation status should be directed to the student's counselor. Special Education Students: Accommodations will be provided for Special Education students during the school closure. Case managers will be reaching out to parents of Special Education students weekly to provide support and facilitate those accommodations. Any required meeting (IEP, Eligibility, etc) will be held virtually via GoogleMeet. If you have questions or concerns about your Special Education student, please contact your case manager. Have a wonderful Spring Break! We hope to see you soon! We here at Corner Canyon sincerely hope that you are staying healthy and safe during these extraordinary times. We will continue to provide you with updates throughout the coming weeks, but here's what you need to know now.
School Hours During Closure: The main office, student center, and media center are open for drop in visits from students and parents on Tuesdays from 9-11am, during the school closure. Students may check out materials from the media center, pick up hard copies of assignments if available, and drop off completed assignments during this time. Keep in mind that teachers may not be in the building. Please reach out to teachers, counselors, and administrators individually If you need to meet with them specifically. Social distancing guidelines, as issued by the Salt Lake County Department of Health, are being observed. While our fields and courts are currently open for public use, pick up games and team sports are not allowed. Students should not be coming to the school for any reason other than to pick up or drop off work, and should not congregate on school grounds or in the school parking lots. All district offices and schools will be closed April 6-10 for Spring Break. End of 3rd Quarter: 3rd Quarter will end on March 27, 2020. All student work should be submitted to teachers by 3:00pm on March 27th. 4th Quarter will begin on March 30, 2020 (B-Day) and will end on May 29, 2020. Online Instruction: All new content instruction for 4th quarter will be delivered via Canvas. We will be following an A/B schedule for 4th quarter and students are expected to be interacting with teachers from 8am to 2:30pm every Monday through Friday. Students should be checking Canvas and their CSDDocs email daily for instructions and assignments. Teachers may also be scheduling live sessions via Zoom or GoogleMeet during their normal class hours. If you have any questions regarding instruction, please reach out to teachers. Spring Events: All activities have been cancelled until May 1, 2020. Updates will be published if events will be rescheduled for later dates. Utah Aspire Plus: The Utah State Board of Education voted to pause end-of-year testing and state accountability this year. Therefore, the Utah Aspire Plus for grades 9-10 is no longer required. Advanced Placement (AP) Exams: As of March 20th, high school students will be able to take their Advanced Placement (AP) exams online, the College Board announced. The test administrator says it is working to build online exams shortened to reflect what classes have been able to cover this year. Students will get to pick one of two testing dates, which will be announced April 3. At that time, the College Board also will reveal the types of questions that will appear on the online exams. Dear Corner Canyon High School,
As Principal of Corner Canyon High School, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back, especially our students. We are all looking forward to another amazing year. The school has come alive as students and teachers have returned filling our building with energy and excitement. It is our mission to help every child feel welcomed, connected, and a part of our Charger family. Additionally, we strive to challenge each student to grow in his or her academic abilities and to be college-ready by the end of the four years. We have amazing teachers who spend hours planning and creating classroom activities to engage our students in learning. Our teachers utilize best practices and analyze academic data to determine current skill levels and to set goals for growth and improvement. We believe that all students should graduate from high school prepared to meet the demands of post secondary education, meaningful careers, and effective citizenship. I am honored to serve as the principal of Corner Canyon High. It is truly a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic and social growth. Welcome Back! Let's make it the best year ever! New Additions to CCHS:
Go Chargers! Are you interested in being a member of the Corner Canyon High School Community Council? We have a few openings for new members for the upcoming 2019-20 school year. If you’re interested, please email Principal Darrell Jensen at [email protected], by 4:00 pm on August 21st . If multiple parents are interested, there will be an election.
The SCC meets monthly to discuss school issues, create a LAND Trust plan, approve professional development plans, and help develop the School Improvement Plan. We invite input from all parents and rely on the SCC to represent both parents and the community. Our first meeting is scheduled for September 5th at 5:00. Transcripts Need a copy of your high school transcripts? Order them online. Applying for college just got easier. Canyons School District is now partnering with Parchment, an online system for ordering high school transcripts. Starting this spring, CSD high school students can order electronic copies of their official transcripts with a push of the button. They can also use the system to electronically send their transcripts to the college or university of their choosing and track the request to ensure the document arrives at its destination. For now, there is no limit to the number of transcript requests students are allowed. The service is free-of-charge for currently-enrolled students and available to graduates for a small fee. Parchment is used by roughly 98 percent of the country’s colleges and universities and should dramatically streamline the college application process for our students. It’s also a time-saver for our school, which prepares and mails thousands of paper transcripts each year. An email will be sent to students’ CSDdocs accounts with a link to our school’s Parchment portal and information about how to register. More information can be found below or at canyonsdistrict.org. Corner Canyon’s Teacher of the Year As Marian Wright Edelman once said, “Education is for improving the lives of others, and for leaving your world better than you found it.” At Corner Canyon, Steve Reed is the kind of teacher who shows his dedication to leaving the world better than he found it by pouring his heart and soul into the improvement of his students. As department chair, Reed leads his science colleagues with innovating practices, data-driven decisions, and collaboration. Students in his class say they learn more in Mr. Reed’s class than any other class, all the while they are pushed harder and challenged more. Reed’s support of his class and lasting impression as a first-class educator are further reasons why Corner Canyon High has selected Steve Reed as the 2019 Teacher of the Year. Pre-med Pathway Graduation Congratulations to the first ever Pre-Med Pathway Graduates! These students have great things heading their way. Great evening celebrating their White-Coat Ceremony. Way to go. Carlee Criddle Ashton Jensen Riley Kraft Katelyn Lassiter Jordan Leung Megan Lindsay Lexi Parker Corinne Tousley Bryant Vicente Graduation Information

Corner Canyon’s PTSA will again be hosting a GradNight event for all students. It will be at Corner Canyon High School beginning Wednesday evening, June 5, at 10 PM. The event will end at 2:00 AM, Thursday morning, June 6. This event is sponsored by the PTSA and not by Corner Canyon High School or Canyons School District. Updated information will soon be available on the school’s website and at: cchsgradnight.com. The year’s events will culminate with the Graduation Ceremony on WEDNESDAY, June 5, at 2:00 PM. The event will be held at the UCCU Center on the Utah Valley University campus. In order to facilitate preparations for the ceremony, graduates are asked to arrive no later than 1:15 PM. Tickets will not be required. There will be ample seating for all guests, but we recommend that other arrangements be made for young children. We want to continue the tradition at Corner Canyon High School of having a classy and dignified event. Please do not do anything that would detract from that. Students should be in best dress underneath their graduation robes. Dressy pants/slacks, dress shirts & ties, blouses, and skirts/dresses are all appropriate options. Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, tennis shoes, flip-flops, extremely high heels, and casual sandals are not appropriate for the graduation ceremony. School dress code also applies. We have a dress standards committee that will be checking for inappropriate dress while seniors are lined up just before the ceremony, and any seniors not dressed appropriately will not be allowed on the floor. Please gently press or steam graduation gowns. To honor students who have earned recognition by the wearing of cords, medallions, and collars and to not diminish from their achievements, no other adornment on caps or gowns will be allowed during the ceremony. Flower bouquets, corsages, or leis will not be allowed on the arena floor during the graduation march or ceremony. Personal items such as accessories or jewelry that draw undue attention or detract from the dignity and decorum of the occasion will likewise not be allowed. Caps should not be altered or decorated in any way. Any caps that have been decorated will be confiscated before the ceremony. Individual photographs will be professionally taken as students receive their diplomas. The purchase of these photos is optional; we will distribute information about photos at graduation practice. If you would like to take photos of your graduate, you will need to do so BEFORE the ceremony. There are several nice vantage points for photographs. Immediately after the ceremony, graduates turn in their gowns so photos in their gowns need to be taken before the ceremony. Parents/guests will not be allowed on the floor of the arena to take photos during the ceremony. Additional graduation information will be posted on the school’s website. Unfortunately, we sometimes have disciplinary issues at the end of the school year. Please be aware that certain violations of district or school policy could prohibit your child from being able to participate in year-end activities, including the graduation ceremony. Seniors who fail classes during 4th quarter due to lack of effort or attendance may not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony. Seniors must clear all 4th quarter NGs to be eligible to participate in the ceremony. Parents, you have been notified if your senior is not on track to graduate. Counselors will notify students as they become eligible to pick up caps/gowns and have been cleared to participate in the ceremony. We appreciate the efforts of faculty, administration, staff, and parents to make the end of the year and the graduation ceremony very special for graduating seniors. Congratulations again to the seniors and the parents of the graduating class of 2019! Go Chargers! Moratorium Lifted
A five-year enrollment moratorium has been lifted at Corner Canyon High, where a 24-classroom addition funded by the $283 million bond approved by voters in November 2017 is now being constructed. The Board of Education on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 voted to allow the school to start accepting Standard Open Enrollment Applications from students who do not live within the boundaries of the school. Because of the moratorium, which prohibited any new out-of-boundary students from attending the school, the school could not keep a waiting list of prospective pupils. As a result of the Board’s decision, Corner Canyon High will begin taking school-choice applications for the 2019-2020 school year at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2019. Applications are submitted online. End of 3rd Quarter March 22nd is the end of 3rd quarter, I encourage students to finish strong! ACT ASPIRE Testing The Utah Aspire test is a hybrid of the ACT and Utah Core test items. This is a computer delivered, high school assessment for students in grades 9 and 10. The test will include subtests for Reading, English, Math, and Science. This is the replacement test for SAGE, that was given in previous years. The ACT Aspire test will take place April 16th – 19th with a school wide modified testing schedule those 4 days. See Schedule Below. Baseball Fundraiser Dinner Corner Canyon will hold a fundraising banquet including live and silent auctions. All Star Wally Joyner will be the featured speaker for the night. Contact Dusty Haycock to purchase tickets 801-809-5204. Basketball State Championships On March 2nd the CCHS boy’s basketball team became the 5A state champs! The team avenged two losses against Jordan High School and defeated Wasatch, Highland and Olympus along the way. The CCHS girl’s basketball team came up short against East High on February 23rd, bringing home 2nd place in the State Championship. Kemery Martin was named Utah Gatorade Player of the Year, the first athlete from Corner Canyon to receive this accolade. Wellness Week March 25 – 29th is Corner Canyon Wellness Week, culminating with a blood drive on Friday. Go Chargers! |
